Erene Kasur Obituary

This is a celebration of life for our mother, Erene Kasur. Her quality of life had diminished over the last couple of years to the point that the family knows she is at peace now and is in a far better place.

Erene Kasur was born in Olchowo, Poland on Jan 19, 1929. She was three years old when her family came to Canada by ship (Alaunia) in 1932 and moved to the Usona area where she spent most of her life. She was schooled and confirmed at Waldheim which is known as Usona Immanuel Lutheran Church today.

On April 14,1947 she married Alvin Kasur and farmed north of Usona where they raised five children, Randy Kasur, Paulette Armstrong, Michael Kasur, Susan McClaflin, and Colleen Sorensen. They became members of the church and farmed there for the next 39 years until Dad’s heart attack in 1986 when they moved to Wetaskiwin and Michael took over the farm. On December 15, 1996 she became a member of the Zion Lutheran Church and lived in Wetaskiwin until 2016 when she moved to the Royal Oak Manor in Lacombe where she lived out the rest of her days and thanks to Royal Oak Manor, she was quite comfortable there.

She is survived by one sister, five children, nine grandchildren, (Numerous) great-grandchildren and nephews and nieces.

When Mom was 14 she got an instant two year old sister (Pat) who she loved dearly.  Because Mom was the youngest girl in the family, they did pretty well everything together and one of Pat's favorite memories was grazing the cows along the road.  When it was time to go home Mom would put Pat on her favorite cow Rosy and it would carry her home.

Mom was wheelchair bound after falling and breaking her hip but she still enjoyed being taken for walks in the park by Royal Oak Manor, bird watching and enjoying the company of Roxy, Colleen & Darryl's dog.

Mom was a hard worker as were most of the farm women then. She loved quilting with her sister Ella and made quilts for all of us kids. She also made a lot of our clothes when we were younger and on special occasions also made bridesmaid’s dresses and Christmas Dresses for the girls. Donna was amazed at how she could take and make her own pattern of something she liked and alter it to fit. She was also good at baking and decorating cakes (Paulette's, Susan’s and Colleen’s wedding cake) as well as bread, buns, and cinnamon rolls. As was the case on most farms, they had a huge garden which took a lot of work to maintain and harvest when the time was right, but we always had plenty of food on the table.

Mom volunteered her cooking and serving skills at the Church and also at the curling rink where after a day of serving at the rink a card game would usually break out. There was a core group who celebrated birthdays and anniversaries at each others homes where the card games got very serious,  I have seen people crawling across the table, but they were always laughing and having fun.

One of my memories was before Colleen was born, Mom was planning to go to the hospital later that night but timing was off a bit and Colleen didn’t want to wait . Around 4:30 Mom said I think it’s time so we better hurry. I assumed she meant hurry to the hospital but she grabbed the milk pails and went out to do the milking first. She got the milking done and Colleen did wait until she got to the hospital, but just barely.

Mom wanted to travel more but managed to go on an Alaska cruise with Dad and his sister Norma and brother-in-law Ed Lammie. She got to Germany with her sister, Ella Schulz and was able to meet some distant relatives there. She also did Eastern Canada and the Grace Land Tour with her sister, Pat.

Mom loved to plant flowers and she always had lots of them in her yard. The Wetaskiwin Communities in Bloom awarded Mom 2nd place in Residential Yard Front & Back in 2008, and in 2009  Mom won 1st place in the Individual Condo Town Home & Mobile Home competition .

Mom always seemed to be more concerned about us kids rather than herself.  When we were having meals at the Royal Oak Manor, she wanted to make sure we had enough and would try and get us to eat some of her meal. We should not be discouraged or mournful with her passing but rejoice in knowing where she is now. She was loved and will be missed.
